Made a mistake with V5 form on late fathers vehicle

Please I could use some advice/help. My dad passed away last year and he owned a vehicle to use as spare parts.
One of my fathers friends offered to take it, I gave the car to him free of charge. When filling out the paperwork he offered to post the V5 forms for me which I accepted (as it was only a week after my dad's death and I wasn't thinking straight, otherwise I would have done it myself).
Honestly I hadn't thought about it for the year, last week I checked online the last registered owner was my late father. Basically the problem I now have is even after contacting his friend he won't confirm if he sent the forms, he has the log book and V5.
I don't want the vehicle back, I know it is not in use and doesn't even work. I just don't want to get fined or get in any trouble with the DVLA. What can I do to fix this? Is there a way to declare change of ownership without the form?
Sorry for the long post, thank you in advance.

at the time you gave the vehicle away was it declared as being SORNed
how long had your father owned the car , presumably it was kept off the road?0 -
Thank you for replying, I'm not sure how long he had it, no more than a few months and he declared it as SORN and kept off road.0

So far as I can see, there is no way the OP can be in trouble because there is paper trail linking him to the car.0

Either way, it's simple. Just write to DVLA's sensitive casework team, explaining the situation, saying that you handed the V5C over, but you don't believe that the new keeper ever registered it in their name.0 -

How did you do that? I wasn't aware of any such facility available to the general public.0
