Landlord charges me to collect spare house key

Thanks all for the responses! Managed to get LL to give us keys for the dead bolt rather than the yale lock, the former of which is kept locked at all times now so we have to unlock it to get out.Just to throw a spanner in the works and open out the "MSE dilemma", is this not a fire risk? Slows down your exit considerably.
(sits back and waits for competing views.....!)
Agree, I always assumed this was a regulation to have a keyless exit ie a way to leave the property without needing a key.. just never looked for the regulation because I think its a good idea for safety anyway!
Plus if you lose the deadbolt key somewhere in the house or if there's two of you and one leaves with the key forgetting the other is inside etc, then you face being locked in..0 -
I don't tend to bother locking the door unless I'm going to be away longer than a day.0

I think that would clearly invalidate your house insurance, unless you lied about it.
Also, assuming you work and are out all day, your house is unlocked every day, which is logically no different to it being unlocked for the same duration whilst you are away.
eg if you go on holiday Mon-Fri your house is unlocked for 5 days, or if you go to work for five days, your house is still unlocked Mon-Fri. Many burglaries take place in the daytime, possibly even more than at night.0 -

Though admittedly, someone who keeps on losing their keys when out of the house maybe also loses them inside the house...0 -

When my door got replaced I ended up with one with a keyless exit deadbolt. Slightly miffed because it'll be harder for me to change the lock myself (although I'm sure I still can). But plenty of older doors with old style locks still exist, and you can still buy replacements for them. On my old door I used to just use the yale to lock it when I was in, and only the deadbolt when I was out.0 -
Just saw this and thought it was perfectly timed given today's BBC article:Shelter wrote:Shelter has said tenants are routinely being overcharged. It lists examples of tenants paying as much as £20 an hour for their landlord's time, £45 for procuring a replacement dustpan and brush - and even £100 for removing cobwebs. None of those charges will be banned by the Tenant Fees Bill.
I've rented for more than a decade and I don't recall I EVER thought it was my landlord's job to procure a replacement dustpan and brush...
If the check-in says dustpan and brush... is it really that hard to leave a dustpan and brush? That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
House Bought July 2020 - 19 years 0 months remaining on term
Next Step: Bathroom renovation booked for January 2021
Goal: Keep the bigger picture in mind...0 -

Surely it is just a euro cylinder with a knob on one end instead of a keyhole, replaced in exactly the same way except it will only come out of one side of the door. Better in a multi person household as you don't get the problem of a key being left on the inside leading to being locked out or maybe a broken key or the lock being twisted so you can't get the key out in one of either locked or unlocked positions.
I always think these locks are extremely vulnerable to panel breakers or letter box removing burglars. Whole estates are built with these thumb turn euro cylinder locks so its a pretty good bet for any criminal that most of the doors can be unlocked if you can get a hand inside.
Re the OP's post, are you intending to keep on forgetting your keys otherwise it doesn't matter. I probably forget my keys at least once every 30 years or so.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0
