Car Warranty

Hoping for some advice. I purchased a used car around 5 weeks ago from a second hand car dealership. The vehicle came with a 3 months parts & labour warranty - the paperwork for which I was told would arrive in the post within a few days.

5 weeks on and no paperwork. There is nothing wrong with the vehicle so far but I would like the warranty as promised as reassurance. I have contacted the dealer 3 times now, and had one reply saying he was away but would sort it as soon as he got back (that was now over a week ago).

I don’t have a lot of faith in the dealer as the car that was supposed to have been fully valeted had crayons under the seats and cobwebs. I drove the car within hours of it arriving as a part ex. and it was left in a very clean state, my suspicion is that he didn’t touch it before the sale.

I imagine that the dealer uses a 3rd party warranty which he pays for and is trying to avoid this expense- anyone have any advice on what I can do or should I just hope for the best at this point?

I wouldnt worry too much - the warranty is probably worthless anyway but fingers crossed.

To be honest If you haven't paid for it then just move on its not going to happen and you put it down to experience and just avoid them and not recommend that trader.

If its something you paid extra for, Then I would go back and ask for your money back. (These warranties actually cover very little on a used vehicle if at all anything of use).

Valeting it well he probably thought as you liked as is you can take it as is, anything to increase profit margins and put food on the table right!

At the very outside, you could purchase your own two month warranty (the first month has passed, and covering month 4 after purchase would constitute betterment) and issue a court claim for the cost.

Or, if there are validly-reclaimable costs incurred during the next two months, simply take the car to the supplier and insist that he fixes them at his cost.

But, really, aftermarket used car warranties are rarely worth the paper they're written on.

TBH you probably don't need the suppliers warranty because as already said, it's likely to cover very little anyway.

Plus any warranty is merely an extension to your statutory rights under the Consumer Protection Act (previously known as the Sales of Goods Act) anyway.

  • Thank you for all the advice - looks like it’s not worth persuing. Clearly living up to the used car salesman stereotype! With the valet I’d asked specifically if it would be done and he assured me it would - made a big deal about how shiney the car was when I picked it up but had actually done nothing to it

Only thing I’ve found with the car is white smoke when starting cold. Not sure if it’s something I should ask the dealer to look into or wether it’s on me now anyway. Having read around it seems it’s not uncommon with diesels and may mean it needs new glow plugs.

if you look at everyones exhaust in the cold they will have steam from hot combustion gasses exiting the engine. This is entirely normal, when its blue or or black then worry

We’ve had diesels for awhile now, so used to a little steam, but this is thick white smoke - so much so I had the next door neighbours commenting about it. It’s definately not blue or black though so hopefully nothing serious.
