    Hi,

can't help with your problem re laptop, but had a look at my house insurance, and although I don't have separate accidental damage cover, in my contents section it states that, accidental damage to television sets (and their aerials), radios, audio equipment, video recording equipment and personal computers is covered.

So have a look at your insurance, you may well be covered.

Just an update: The repair shop have been unable to get it to work saying it requires parts that will cost more than it's worth... so I have checked the home insurance and it turns out we are covered as above!!!! £150.00 access but it could have been worse!
  • Don't forget that your next premium will probably go up as well. Your original description of the problem suggests that the motherboard/processor/screen and ram are working, and that there may be a problem with the hard disk or ribbon cable, they don't cost anywhere near £150, if that is the only problem.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Hi,

well thats good that you are covered, but £150 excess, wow!

You get the cash from insurance for a new machine, minus £150, but with a wee bit of digging and probing you could maybe fix the old one, and insurance sometimes takes a bit of time to come through.

It's over a week now since first post, so maybe no hurry.

If it was me, I would try the home repair, first, I'd be right into the guts of it, its broken anyway.

New, up-to-date, reliable and better quality laptops can be bought for as little as £299-399 if you time it right. I wouldn't bother wasting £150 on getting it fixed if you have your data backed-up elsewhere.
  • Hi,

agree what you are saying about batteries and water.

My mobile phone got a bit of water into it one day, was only walking in a very heavy shower of rain, and texting, thought nothing about it, phone back into pocket, when I got home, funny screen  , tried to fast dry it, on top of an electric heater  , no good, end result, new phone.

You're right , any water intake, get the battery out straight away, and let phone dry out gradually.
