Is your HB paid directly to the landlord? Is this social housing? How many weeks in arrears is it paid?

The overriding important thing to do is to notify every department of your change of circumstances. Otherwise you could get an overpayment.

So, have you told the Job Centre you are not attending tomorrow and why?

You don't say why you no longer wish to claim JSA. Have you got a job?
  • Hi pmlindyloo, thanks for the quick reply,

my HB is paid into my bank account, not social housing - privately rented, and it is paid four weekly one month in arrears.

I haven't told them I am not attending on thursday as I am worried the HB payment for the previous month will be cancelled, and thought if I were to leave it to the latest I could in hopes that the payment comes through beforehand.

And I want to stop claiming as I won't be in the country to do so - moving back to home (although I am British just lived elsewhere until Sep 2017)
  • You really do need to tell them in advance that you won't be attending, and make an alternate appointment to discuss formally coming off benefits for your emigration properly (just not turning up does not cancel your claim to it). They really can start throwing around all sorts of random sanctions for missing appointments without explanation.

(edit - I know you'll be leaving the country, but just in case you do consider coming back it will be best to leave on good terms and with the proper sign off etc.)
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)
  • The issue is I will not have time to do so, I will be leaving within the next few days as I have some family business I need to deal with...

The lady I first had an appointment with told me I must attend the appointment otherwise my benefits will simply be cut off, and in this case that is what I was hoping for.

Instead of posting on here you could be on the phone to them ;)
  • LOL, good point! Again though I don't know much about this stuff as I have lived abroad most of my life, but really need this HB payment to come through for the last months rent and didn't know what would happen if I had phoned

do you have a date you can give them when you decided to move back and so stopped job search? (that they can stop JSA from)
how long ago did you give your landlord notice?
  • I have to be moved out by the 25th.

I haven't stopped looking for jobs exactly, so no specific date...

Is it not possible for you to attend your appointment? If it is possible it will save any hassle. A decision has to be made to stop your JSA and I would have thought that would take a few days and that it wouldn't happen there and then because you didn't turn up. But you may incur an overpayment of Housing Benefit.

Have you missed other JSA appointments? It seems incredibly harsh if this is your first attempt to rearrange (I assume you tried to do that?) an appointment. If you simply said "I'm not going" then yes, I can see why you were told your benefit would stop. But I'm sure it wouldn't cease immediately but you do know you won't get any JSA?

    Hello,

So basically I am going to be missing my next JSA appointment (this thursday 22nd) as I no longer wish to claim JSA. I should be receiving my next HB payment on the 26th - 4 days after I miss my JSA appointment.

I know that once I miss the appointment all of my benefits will be cancelled, but I only want this next HB payment for the last months rent on my flat.

Will I still receive the HB payment on the 26th? On my services on the gov website it says it was sent on the 17th, but I am just worried they'll cancel the payment once I don't attend the appointment - even though it is paid in arrears...

I don't really know much about how it all works so any help is really appreciated.

When you miss an appointment for JSA and the DWP suspend that claim this will trigger a report to the HB team, which will then suspend any HB.

If your claim for JSA is suspended straight away i.e. Friday then any HB payments due will be suspended.

However as payments are posted to the bank around Wednesday you may see it on Monday.

When the JSA claim is cancelled then HB will have to write out for further information - which they won't get as you won't be there.

I would ring both departments and explain it to them as it's rather rude not to let these people know you are leaving the country.
