Of course, i totally agree that people should check their oil, but at the end of the day saying to him 'just pay up and learn from the mistake' is not mse.

Potentially the engine had a rather large issue (before it had an even larger one), granted if it has done 10,000+ miles without being checked. but we need to know how many miles it was driven in that 4 months to make a judgement, if its only done 1000 miles and the light came on, that's excessive, but as you say motorguy, could be 'normal' if it was 8000 miles.

not that i would put up with a car using a litre every 1000 miles. (unless its designed to do such as some rotary engines)

I also think, that if the engine was sufficiently damaged to put the light on again within 200 miles, that it would be making some strange noises. I know not everyone is attuned to their engine sound, but still.

1000km was quoted, not miles. 1000km is roughly 621 miles.

most manufacturers state 1000 miles/litre as the limit for acceptable burn, which is why i said it.

I suspect this Polo GTi is the 1.4 TSi "Twinchager" (turbo and supercharger) engine which has been a thorn in the side for VW/Skoda and was a lemon from day one.

It suffered severe oil consumption (we talking a litre per 300-400 hundred miles) and piston damage due to excess combustion heat from the off.

VW did buy a lot of them back and eventually withdrew the engine, but there are still lots out there causing owners grief.

You could do with some proper consumer/legal advise,.
VW themselves have washed their hands of them now as they are all over the age which they are legally still responsible, but the fault was already there when you bought the car, so you should have some redress with the seller if it's within 6 months.
