Reassessment form for esa query

In the section about money it asks for the total of savings. I’m doing the form for my son as I have authority. A couple of days ago we moved some moneyfrom his isa to our savings account towards a replacement car as the car is mainly used for him as we felt it fair that he made a contribution. Then the form arrives and we realise that though the total of his money is now under the 6000 threshold it would have been over had we not moved the money. On contribution based esa his savings didn’t count so moving him over, if that’s what happens it will. We will have to produce a copy of his bank statement as the next question is has he had more than 5500 in his accounts from a certain date, which he had. Should we move the money back as we don’t want to be untruthful about it? It does look a bit suspect though it’s quite genuine. A bit worried about it.

It doesn't matter where the money is, it counts when being assessed for the Income related top up.
  • Even if it’s now in our account? Quite happy to put it back as I don’t want them to think we were trying to hide it!

Yes. You have stated that his money has been moved to your account as his contribution towards the purchase of a car. Until the money is actually spent it will be considered to be his for Income Related benefit purposes. You don't need to move it back, simply include it in the figures you provide to DWP and highlight the transfer out on his statement with an explanation for the move.
  • Thank you. That’s a relief.
