The Select Debit Cards in Spain and South America are all Mastercard Debit though so possibly some truth in that as well !

Firstly, they've removed the benefit from Santander Mortgage holders.


The only conditions to get a Select account are now - £5000 per month in salary to be paid in (it was £1000), OR £75K of savings/investments.


£5000 per month should you be lucky enough to earn this much, after tax, NI and average pension contributions equates to over £130,000.


As the Government savings protection scheme is capped at £85K and if you had this much at the beginning of October in a stocks and shares ISA, it will now be worth less than £75K, the number of people who can qualify for this account is now less than 1% of the population, in other words, they don't want our business, and they've hidden these changes in a letter ostensibly about a change of debit card provider.



Very underhand and dishonest. I will consider closing my account if the 123 Lite is not the best going forwards (the cashback is still good), and the mortgage is too much hassle to switch, but I'll move my ISAs elsewhere. They no longer are deserving of my business or my loyalty

It says £5k income pm - which AFAIK is not necessarily just salary.

Having received the letter telling me my new debit card will be red, my new debit card arrived today & it's gold! I re-read the letter & it seems the red ones will start being issued between 21st & 24th January, but that gold ones won't be replaced until they run out. So I'll be able to remain smug for another 4 years!

They are changing their debit scheme from Visa to Mastercard in the interim.
You'll likely become 'red' at when they do that.

The Select account is more automated checks now, but the older 123 Gold Account doesn't really have automated checks that was all reports being generated and manual review by Select customer service agents apparently (was told on the phone).

My downgrade to Lite just completed but as they take the opportunity to deactivate paper billing I need to login 24 hours later to change it back.

I expect my next debit card will be made from asbestos to punish me.

Just an update.
I was one of those where the letter said that they where changing the select account and no longer issuing gold cards. It didn't mention any colour so assumed it would be black. my existing card is going to expire soon, new card arrived yesterday and it is a gold select visa.

Woo - they just reissued me with a gold card on my recently downgraded 123 lite account!!
