Im looking for an all in one computer for my grandson, mainly for homework. I have been looking at HP (the girl in currys told me HP were one of the most reliable) Looking to pay around £500 any ideas? Anyone had a HP computer before?

If its mainly for homework then you can get one for less than £500
Have a look on some other websites, try this one to start:

HP are ok, all brands are ok.0 -
HP would be a Currys promotion as good .
Personally HP would be way down the list .0 -
Thank you, will take a look. I have had a few dell laptops but am disappointed with them, seem to die after about 2 years. Any recommendations welcome0

I found Dell were dreadful. HP, on the other hand, have been reliable. I'm typing on a HP laptop at the moment, and it is around 10 years old. It wasn't top of the range, but it does everything that I need it to, and a few more things besides.
For £500, think about a lower priced computer and add in the MS Office package. A range of HP printers can be used with Instant Ink, which is a great scheme. It costs £1.99 a month for fifty pages (black or colour ink), and unused pages can be rolled over to the next month. So adding a printer could be useful too, especially if you pay for the ink as well. There are larger packages available if he needs more printing, but the smaller deal should be fine.0 -
I've had a couple of HP laptops over the years, none bought from Currys. Very reliable. Asus are also supposed to be good but I have personally not used one.0

Don't buy all in one. Waste of money.
Not portable
expensive to fix when anything go wrong
cannot be upgrade.
i suggest you buy a monitor with small desktop or laptop.0 -
Thanks everyone, all comments taken on board :-)0

I really wouldn't buy a cheapish HP from Currys. I've had a couple and the build quality is pretty poor. I'm pretty sure Currys get a special "low grade" supply from HP so that they can sell them at a suitable price point in their shops.
I've also been underwhelmed with relatively cheap Dells, likewise which I find poor build quality. I think you have to move up the scale to get decent HP and Dell kit, not the cheaper end.
The only computers I've been totally happy with are Samsung laptops (they don't make them anymore - I've had 6 laptops which lasted over a decade and still going strong though now as backup storage only). Just discovered Lenovo laptops, which I've found to be really good, sturdy, etc and I'm about to order some more. (I'm a business user with a small office, so have about 6-8 computers on the go in daily use on average).
I'd suggest you get a laptop, rather than a desktop. You can get a cheap keyboard, mouse and screen if you want to set it up as a desktop for long term keyboard use, but at least having a laptop means it's portable and can be used in other rooms, on your knee, etc for browsing or leisure use. I think if you got a desktop, you'd find it limiting and would end up buying a laptop anyway later.0 -
Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
I’ve moved your thread from the ‘I wanna’ board to the ‘Techie Stuff’ board, where it is better suited.
