Pet Insurance

Renewal time and I'm shopping around because

1) premiums have gone up (annual increase, no claims made)
2) the level of cover is no longer sufficient (want £5k plus per condition)
3) our vet isn't dealing with our insurer directly any more which raises red flags

We're currently with Animal Friends. They have mixed reviews, as they all do.

Have had quotes from PetPlan, MiPet and Aviva. Aviva is cheaper at about £22 a month, PetPlan and MiPet are coming in at £30 a month.

Any recommendations for/against?

  • Our vet doesn't deal with any insurers directly. I think it comes from the delay in payment when a claim is being processed.
I only changed from Petplan when the premiums got too expensive. We're currently with Morethan. I've not had to claim, so can't really review.

If it i important that your vet claims direct then you first need to confirm with them what companies they will claim direct from.

Petplan do not increase your premium if you make a claim. Most companies do. Their premiums do tend to be higher because of this.
Premiums do however increase due to increased costs generally.

Be aware that there is an exclusion period when you start a new policy so it is better to overlap the policies.
It does mean that if you need to claim it would have to be with the old policy and if an ongoing condition you wanted to claim for you would need to continue with the old policy and cancel the new one.

I tis difficult to recommend one policy over another a people's needs are different.

Read the policy document- not the summary- carefully to make sure you know exactly what you are covered for. Many complaints arise because someone assumed cover which their policy did not give.

Petplan is the Rolls Royce of policies but they are more expensive.

Cheap insurance may be cheap for a reason and you may only find out that reason when you make a claim.
