You can do what you want with the money but you still won't be able to to claim any means tested benefits, when you have over the maximum amount. Is there any amout I can give back to my mum, even if its £1k? As I said earlier I have been living under her roof rent free etc, so feel I owe her something.
Why weren't you paying your mum when you lived there?0 -
Because she wouldn't accept the money until I got a place of my own, which I now have done so.0

The most sensible thing to do seems to be to live off the money in the savings and then repay it when you start work, once you have £24k again you can repay it to your mum, if you still desire to do so."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

This was a gift from your mother to an ISA account in your name.
It became your money from the moment it entered your account.
If the money was a gift it is normally non returnable. Loans are returnable.I enjoy flower arranging, kittens, devil worship, the study of serial killers and their methods and road kill jigsaws.0 -
This money is unquestionably your capital.
You could give it all or part of it away to anybody you liked but you cannot expect to claim means tested benefits to replace it.
If you feel that you owe your mother some recompense for the board and lodging, why not wait until you have a job and are earning enough not to require benefits?0
