income related ESA and council tax

My son has been placed in the ESA support group--income related. He has been given a reduction on his council tax but was under the impression he'd be exempt from council tax payments (as this was the case when he was previously in this group.) I suspect things might have changed. Do councils still give full support to ESA claimants, or is a reduction of payments the best he can expect? There's not much on-line about this so any advice would be great.

Each council now set their own rules about council tax reduction.

Although there are some prescribed requirements legislated, being on income based ESA isn't one of them.

As mentioned by pmlindyloo council tax reduction/support differs in all councils.

If you want to be sure you can search your councils website for the amount he will have to pay.

It has to state the % working age people have to pay.

    eg

    Dover is 10%

    East Yorkshire is 25%

Just in case people don't click on the links (I am amazed at how many people don't) it might be worth adding that the % that working age people have to pay is the minimum even if they are on income related benefits or on a low income.

Hope you don't mind my mentioning this.
