Updated coop bank app won't work on note 3, and they have said their new app won't either.....

I don't think anyone has established yet what OS OP is running, and whether it's the latest one available, before we start with unofficial apps or (shudder!) spending money on a new phone!0

I think we have!Blackpool_Saver wrote: »The phone has the latest update on it. Am I getting to the point now with a Note 3 where this will start to happen with all apps more and more, or are co op talking out of their you know what?.... this phone, out in September 2013, is 5 years old and doesn't officially support Android 5.1 which is the minimum version required for the co-op app - it only goes to 5.0
I can confirm that Android 5.0 is the latest version of software available for the Galaxy Note 3, and although you can download the Co-op app from the store, it will not work.0 -
Please don’t confuse the Custom Rom with rooting.
You are able to use the Custom Rom (OpenSource version of Android OS developed by community) WITHOUT rooting, if you like to.
I have just confirmed that Lineage OS 14.1 (Android 7.1) 15.1 (Android 8.1) without rooting works with Halifax, Santander, HSBC. I have just installed Coop bank app, and it seems OK. Notable exception is Barclaycard, which does not like CustomRom, even without rooting.
[FONT="]I myself am not keen to use financial apps anyway, but I just want to point out the benefit of Custom Roms, which extend device life much much longer. You are a victim of software obsolescence. In this way, fully functional smartphones are forced to give up. If you intend to buy a new phone, I would suggest Android One device with Android 8 (Oreo) or later, (don't buy Any Android 7 or earlier)
If you use Android One Smartphone, you will get no bloatware with faster software upgrade from the OEMs. Android One devices will get a similar Android experience with Google Pixel devices.

I would suggest you to look at Xiaomi Mi A2 or Mi A2 Lite, they are Android One devices, they are available in the UK officially now. For instance, Android 9 (Pie) is already available for Xiaomi A2.In addition, Android One devices are opensource developer's friendly, these devices are very likely to support Android OS by community for a long term.
Not many paid media (i.e. advertisement) don't talk about software update issue, but as you have experienced, the software is the key for the user experience. Please do your own research.0 -
The Co-Op app is so rubbish it's hardly worth bothering about.0

If you're feeling brave, you could install LineageOS. It's a free, open-source version of Android that still receives updates.
It works well (better than the stock Android installation) on my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone. My NatWest banking app works fine.

Sucessor to Cynaogen? :T
Nice - I've got an S4 and a couple of S2's that could likley do with a spruce up, might give it a go - I think I'll be "upgrading" my current S4 to the girlfriend's now abandoned S5 over christmas too, since she's bugging me to ge a new phone (my mic is dodgy)...
I don't go through phones often but first thing I do when I'm looking at one is check out the custom rom support.
Currently using CM 12 or 13 rooted on my S4, don't have a problem with Natwest but Hargreaves Lansdown (where I keep my LISA) doesn't play nice with a rooted phone.
Next time I root I'll look into a newer method I've seen where people are having success hiding the rooted status from certain apps.
Personally if I were the OP I'd be looking into a custom rom built on a new version of Android loo-oong before I considered replacing perfectly good hardware.
The software is free, the hardware ain't.0 -

Me neither! But I understand that the "old" method of rooting meant that you were running everything as root. The newer method is more like Windows UAC or Linux sudo, where everything runs as a limited user by default; if an app requests root access, the OS issues a prompt and you can either accept or deny the request.
Presumably, if you block root access for an app, it would never know the phone was rooted.
Also, Lineage OS doesn't have root capabilities by default. If you don't need root access, it's probably best not to enable it.0 -
Thanks Nick. So if the OP is up to it, maybe try installing an Lineage OS on their phone, based on at least Android 5.1, but I'd give Marshmallow a go. If not, new phone...0

This thread made me chuckle with suggestions to flash custom ROMs.Hmm, my car's a bit old, do I really need to get a new one?
Well, you could change the engine and braking system. It's easy, all you need is a workshop and these components.....0 -
^^ I see you are new here - you do realise this is a money saving website dont you ?
Advising someone to get a newer phone, when there is nothing wrong with the one they have is definitely not money saving.
And comparing flashing a ROM onto a phone to replacing the major components of a car - I would suggest you are not fit to be advising on a tech forum0
