For the past few years, any I've bought have came from Autotrader or Ebay.
It's normally from dealers, but I search for ages and wait until I think I'm getting a good deal, and I'm willing to travel if something jumps out at me.

In lieu of any indication of budget from the O/P, i'm inclined to agree.

Of the low percentage of private sales listed these days, a high percentage will be unscrupulous traders masquerading as private sellers anyway.

A up to 3yr old, 15,000m, smallish car that still can be used for a baby (5 door and boot big enough for pushchair). Budget = cheapest way of doing that!

Not sure if that helps you with where to recommend?
  • Motorpoint or The Car People? I've bought from Motorpoint twice and been pleased, a couple of friends have done likewise with The Car People.

It does a bit, you wont find many cars less than 3 years old under 15,000 miles on facebook.

Look on autotrader - you say that they are all dealers with high prices, which cars are you looking at?
Car supermarkets may be an option, then go to a main dealer to research the actual cost of similar cars.

You wont find many private people selling a newer than a 3 year old car with less than 15,000 miles as they would of had to of bought the car brand new, not sure why you would do that and sell in within 3 years.

Can you ferry your baby around in a 5 or 6 year old car with 50,000 miles ? If you can then look at older cheaper cars.

As per other posts, i'd recommend you look at a dealers but be prepared to travel for the right car.

If you're looking cheap reliable transport a Hyundai will have the balance of the manufacturers 5 year warranty and KIA will have the balance of their 7 year warranty (though DO check the warranty is still valid as missed services invalidates it)

If you're not doing big miles, avoid diesels.

This. I live in an area with low population density where as a result used car prices are quite high. Travel west 60 miles and they drop considerably.

Buyer from dealers who inflate the cars value and insist on making a living, how awful. They should all sell cars at a loss. :)

Or buy from a private seller who has seen a similar car on autotrader from a dealer, and thinks their cars worth more because they wash it every week??

So the private seller wants more money, yet offers no warranty and virtually no chance of getting your money back if it blows up on the way home.

Not bought from a private seller for a long time. Always managed to find a dealer with the right car at the right price.

Yeah its a bit of a pain knowing they make a profit.. but... Life sucks :)
