Home Security

Hello, I hope this is the right thread to use.
Sadly we were the victims of a robbery on our property a week ago and worse than that, we've been informed of a car coming back to look this week in the dead of night - I'm guessing to see if what was taken was replaced and potentially to take it again! Trying to be a bit vague so as not to identify myself.
The thing is - we're not sleeping as we are up all night jumping at every noise. Its horrible.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on home security that is affordable.
We have a security light, triggered by movement, going in and we've been told our front door is secure (they didn't try to enter the house) .
We've taken to leaving random lights inside the house on at night too. Our neighbours around us have also installed security lights and they also have CCTV as they were shook up by it.
We've set up a bit of a residents group to let each other know about any suspicious activity and some neighbourhood watch signs have gone up.
But does anyone have any suggestions beyond that please? Can you get Neighbourhood watch bin stickers? Is it worth investing in a fake house alarm box? We couldn't afford the real thing?
I've added a steering lock to my car - but is there anything else we can do?
Any advice would be so welcome - I'm terrified at the moment and although we've reported all to the police, patrol are exceedingly rare in our village. Everything seems so expensive...
TIA

I wouldn't waste any money on fake security equipment. You can get quite cheap CCTV recording systems, but anyone with a bit of nous will be covered up.
Did they break into a garage?0 -
No they stole parts from a car on our drive. Professional job, super quiet, didnt even set the car alarm off!0

If people want to break in, they will. Aside from sensible precautions like decent locks and closing your windows, there is very little one can do - especially against skilled burglars.
A murderous dog would be decent, but those cost more than a security system.
You just need to get on with your life.0 -
Sorry to hear this Rosie78. We had an attempted break-in a few years ago - not a nice experience to say the least. I'm afraid the advice the police gave us was exactly the same as stated as by Grenage. Additionally, they did advise that we remove a tall hedge from the front of our property - would then make it easier for neighbours to see what was going on

I have ADT and one of the best locks for a PVC door.
On the back window I fitted a simple bar in the middle.0 -
What lock is that?0

I have always liked the idea of these.

Thats a really interesting product and I was amused by this "Ensure the device is not placed where children can gain access" as thats most of the burglars in our area!0 -
All you can do is make sure you are as secure as you can be, and have good insurance. But it's horrible - have victim support been to see you? I found them really helpful (they came out to me, even though it was our neighbour that was burgled - I was the one that reported it, as they were on holiday at the time). No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
