Third Anniversary First Post
Hi all. I've been a member of the Forum for years, but had to re-register to be able to access it??? change p/word etc, weird. It would appear all my previous posts have also been wiped.

Anyway, Is this another way to screw the consumer out of their cash. I refer to the passport ripoff.
I've been told that a UK passport needs 6 months of legality before travelling. So when renewal is required, the date it starts from is the date it is issued, irrespective of its original expiry date, so months could be wiped off the original passport. Mine expires in August 2019, so the question is,what's the latest I should apply for a new one to minimise the loss of days/weeks. I travel in July.
Cheers

  • Not necessarily true.

Depends on the country you are travelling too.

Go to https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice - choose the country you are travelling too, and check the entry requirements.

Most countries would just expect your passport to be valid the duration of your stay, like Spain for example. But with some middle eastern countries, say Iran, they would require at least 6 months.

Also, for EU travel, if we leave with no deal on March 29, please see this: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/passport-rules-for-travel-to-europe-after-brexit
Where advice is EU travel will require at least 6 months validity from date of arrival
  • Thank for your reply & link. Our holiday will be a cruise to the Baltics, so I'm guessing that I only need to renew my passport in time for the the start of the holiday ie July, as we will be away when mine expires, that's ignoring the Brexit situation for now.
If this is correct, when would I be advised to apply for a new one.

    And.. The.. Campaign.. Is..?

Seriously, the recent change in passport validity/renewals rules and the re-register/password thing are amply covered in the relevant and appropriate forums..!
  • Sorry for my indiscretion. Believe me,I searched for the relevant forum. If you could direct me to said forum I'd be obliged.
Obviously, apart from erasing all my details, why? I know not, the site has undergone a transformation, since my last visit.

So the 'ripoff' is around £4.50 spread over the 10yr (or actually 9½yr) life of a passport.

You're going to create a campaign over 50p per year ??

I'm all for Moneysaving but given the cost of international travel it doesn't even register on the scale
  • I've already explained why my post is in the wrong forum, but your point is relevant. I've read, in the paper (so it must be true!!) of people losing 6 mths on their passport at renewal time. What would you say to that if it applied to your MOT, car ins, etc? To save anymore gripes on this forum about my stupidity (my word) of posting in the wrong area, I'll do as I should in the first place & get the relevant paperwork.

The Overseas travel and Site Feedback boards cover it all - and Feedback also documents the considerable changes and upheavals this site has had in the last couple of years.
  • Thanks pogofish.

It's because if they were to add on unexpired months then your new passport would have a validity of more than 10 years.
Apparently that is now a problem with some countries who now no longer recognize validity periods of more than 10 years for passports and will hence reject the passport as being a valid travel document
Hence new passports now loose the unexpired months
Blame them not our own government.

pretty sure I read that it's an EU requirement that the maximum passport validity is 10 years so we've had to change our process.
It was certainly NOT a UK government initiative.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
