Virgin card - linked to email address

I use more than one email address and have two virgin cards.
I was recently buying something online, had an issue with the process for registering an account, so had to phone.
The person took my order, contact details, card number etc and said, sorry that email address has been rejected, let me delete the card and try again. She took payment details again and said sorry it's still rejecting that email address.
I use a different email address to access that Virgin account online, thought it might be something to do with that, gave her the other email address and it went through.
Ive never came across that before, is it common for payment systems to match the card to the email address provided?

In my experience it shouldn't matter what email address is used for your store account vs your card account - I've had plenty of success using buying stuff online where the email address of my store accounts wouldn't have matched the registered email addressed used for my payment card. It could be something specific to Virgin, but I can't comment on that as I don't have a card with them - might be worth following up on it directly with them.0
