Cookies - (I think)

More of a rant but advice would be good how to prevent happening again..

Had a browse through a few sites on my laptop for ideas for Christmas presents for my family. DS went onto laptop and signed into his facebook and ad's for all the items have randomly appeared on his facebook feed.

Now also appearing on his phones facebook.

So he now has a fair idea of everything I have considered buying.

Not a big issue I suppose but very annoying.

Yes, this'll be caused by cookies, but I have no idea how to prevent it (theres probably an adblocking addon you can get) other than ensuring that other users on your laptop have their own windows login, then "your" cookies will remain in your account.
  • That is why some of us use ad blocking browser add-ons and set the browser to delete cookies on exit.

If you check what goes on in the background while viewing many web sites, you will see Facebook and Google (and many others) collect details about what you are viewing. This is the reason you see targeted adverts when reading your local news web pages.

If you really want to clean junk from your system, try the Bleachbit program.

Easiest way to prevent it is to use an incognito browsing session.
If you are using Google Chrome just click on the 3 dots at the right hand side and then click New Incognito Window.
Then anything you do in that window will not be tracked or saved.

Now that he knows what's happening you could deliberately search for a few hoax things without going incognito, e.g. new iphone xs, holiday to cancun, etc.

Could also try going to Settings and delete all cookies before you close your browser - if you do this it might also clear all your saved passwords.

Would second the use of Private browsing - this is what I do.

you should have looked at some very outlandish stuff too ;)

My friend bought a surprise discounted anniversary present for his wife, paid by card. He got home and opened the door his wife asked him about the present, she had receive a text from the Card company informing her what he purchased, from whom and how much it cost, thanks to anti-fraud measures.
