Motability during appeal

Options
Hi, I thought I would make this a new post to help anyone else who is confused about the Motability 26 weeks transition period, when you are successful in your appeal.
I had no idea that I was expected to pay arrears to Motability during this time, as I assumed this was part of their transitional scheme.
They have not put this information anywhere, so I am posting the email I received today.

NB I could find nowhere on my original letter that stated this, despite their insistent that it was there!

Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thank you for your enquiry dated 13 November 2018 regarding your recent transition from the Disability Living Allowance to the Personal Independence Payment.

I would be happy to explain our position when it comes to rental arrears, which covers the time that you were able to keep hold of your vehicle throughout this transition period. I would also like to apologise that you feel this information was not made clear to you, particularly as this may have changed your decision as to whether you kept hold of the car.

I can confirm that in the letter sent to yourself dated 18 July 2018 on page 2, the following information was advised:

‘If you are later awarded ERMC of PIP, you may receive a backdated payment from the DWP covering the period of time from when your allowance stopped. Should this period cover time when you still had a Motability Scheme vehicle, we may ask you to repay this period to us if you wish to re-join or remain on the Scheme.’

The reason why this information is not available via the Motability website is because there area few factors to consider as to whether a person will owe rental arrears. We would only look to charge arrears if a person has been reimbursed by the DWP at the appropriate rate, to cover a period in which they were able to make use of their Motability car.

We certainly recognise that this is not your fault however, I can see that the DWP did reimburse you to cover this period and therefore from 8 August 2018 to 31 October 2018 when payments resumed, there are arrears outstanding of £717.00.

I do hope that this clarifies our position. If you have any further questions, you have the option to respond to my email. Alternatively, you can contact our Customer Support Centre on 0345 155 6011, where a member of the team would be happy to help you.

I have deleted the names for privacy reasons.

Yours sincerely
