Remove Kitchen and Prep for New Kitchen Fitting

Hi everyone,

I was given some great advice about buying a kitchen here recently, so I wondered if anyone can also advise on the building prep work needed before the kitchen can be fitted.

Here is a quote I have been given. I wasn't expecting it to be so expensive as this. Does it seem like a fair price? I'm in South Wales.

  • Isolate electrics and water supply, remove kitchen and cart away.
  • Form new window in the rear of the property to include concrete lintels.
  • Supply and fit new white uPVC window.
  • Make good to all disturbed areas.
  • Remove existing window on the side of the property and cart away.
  • Brick up window with bricks to match (as close as possible).
  • Take down ceiling and cart away.
  • Remove plasterboard to the partition wall and cart away, all plasterboard to be disposed of
  • correctly.
  • Form new doorway in the partition wall between the lounge and kitchen area.
  • Remove existing sliding door and frame and cart away.
  • Block up existing doorway and make good.
  • Hack off render to all internal walls and cart away.
  • At this stage your electrician and plumber can come in to carry out first fix.
  • Plasterboard ceiling with skim finish.
  • Plasterboard stud wall with skim finish.
  • Cement render and skim all block walls.
  • Supply and fit new door lining, oak veneered door complete with ironmongery.

The cost of the above mentioned works is £4,650.00 + VAT @ 20% to include all labour and materials.

    How long is the time frame to do this, it does seem a bit on the high side we are talking 5k, to really rip out things and take them away, im not sure of your diy skills but i could do all the ripping out myself and do the boarding, the only thing that i would need help with is plastering and the lintel beams everything else is quite straight forward if you take your time



    i was quoted a extra £500 to rip out my bathroom and to get rid of it, so i just did it my self and saved the money, dont be afriad to takle things yourself you never know what you can do untill you try

    Did you read the same list that I did? It's pretty major building work to most people, not just ripping out.

    They're ripping everything out of the room, including all of the plaster, they're knocking a brand new window into the wall and installing it, with all the relevant brickwork, blocking up an existing window, matching the bricks in outside, knocking through a new door way and installing a new one inside, blocking off an old doorway as well and then re-plastering the whole room.

    I think the price looks reasonable but I would ask where the new wiring sits in this as the first fix clearly needs to occur before any plastering. Where is the architrave and skirting? Also, why rendering the external walls, particularly?

    I did, maybe to most people its seems like a major job, thats why i asked the op, what his diy skills are like so to cut costs he can at least try to do some of the work himself, im not saying that he needs to do it all but as this is a money saving site it always helps to save hence the op asking is the quote was fair, he he could do a few jobs himself with help from family etc... he could save a few days labour and maybe learn a few skills in the process

    Some of the work even i would not attempt but i could do at least 60% of it and saving money in the process, this is just my point of view due to my own personal experience, just this summer we saved a shed load of money doing jobs on my brothers new doer upper house, the biggest one was the garden did the patio, decking build a small wall and some artificial grass first time never done this before we just took our time

    im in the motor trade as my main job but what i learnt quite quickely is that jobs do get exaggerated, even in the trade im in but like i say its my own personal opinion based on my own experience

  • So difficult to estimate for this size of work over a forum.....

    You really must get at least three quotes for this size of work - Yes, its hassle, but you will gain much from it and also ensure you get the best price (not necessarily the cheapest!).
