MSE Cheap Energy Club - changing from Economy 7 to standard

Hi

I have just moved into a house that has an economy 7 meter (2 dials on the electricity meter.) I'm not sure why, as there are no storage heaters here. At my previous address, I was on an Economy 7 tariff and so had that on my profile for comparison at MSE Cheap Energy Club.

I have just called Scottish Power who are the current supplier at the new property. I have opened an account on a standard tariff (no exit charges) as they need an account open in order to change the meter to a non-E7, single dial meter. Once up and running, I will get the meter changed.

I have updated my new address at MSE Cheap Energy Club but am still seeing E7 tariffs. Is this because the site checks the meter for this address using a database (as the energy companies do) to determine that it's an E7 meter (and if so, will this automatically update once a standard meter is fitted?) Or is there somewhere in my Cheap Energy Club profile that I can change the search comparisons to standard (non-E7) tariffs for my new home?

In the Cheap Energy Club FAQs, under "Or, do you have an economy 7 meter", it just says:

This is a separate question on the registration form, to which you can answer yes or no. Economy 7 doesn’t appear in the dropdown list of tariff names, as Economy 7 is a meter type rather than a tariff.

Once registered, I cannot find anywhere to change this to "no".

Please help me with how to update my profile to only search for non-E7 tariffs!

In the worst case, I may have to re-register with MSE Cheap Energy Club but surely there must be a way to update this?

Thanks in advance.
Richard

MSE does not check what type of meter is registered to your address

You need to edit your electricity account within MSE where it asks the question 'Do you have an Economy 7 meter".

If you set that to 'no' you will only see non-economy 7 tariffs
(which includes setting your current tariff)

Personally I'd have given it a couple of months to see if I could find the answer 'why'. You don't have to have storage heaters for E7 to work out cheaper than single rate. You'd only know for sure by having a couple of month's of data for day vs night consumption.

Why? Why not ask your supplier to bill you on the basis of a single rate calculated by combining the two readings? That way you can continue to monitor your day vs night consumption for a while to confirm you made the right choice to switch to a single rate. If you find out you are wrong then it would be easier to switch back to E7 if the meter is still in place.

  • Scottish Power who are the current supplier

You have all and more info than you need

    - GoTo your supplier's online account. All your detailed info is registered there and immediately accessible. E7 is both a tariff and 2 [E7] 3 [Comfort Plus & E10] tier meter type.

  • Unless they've changed in the past 3 years, Scottish Power cannot handle dual readings on a single rate tariff. In the middle of switching to them from BG they realised that I had an Economy 7 meter even though I was on a single rate tariff with BG, they aborted and reversed the switch as their system could not handle the dual reading electric meter. it caused a load of confusion that took about 6 months to sort out!

There are suppliers who can handle dual rate meters on a single rate tariff - BG, Sainsburys Energy and Affect Energy in my personal experience, there's a thread on here about exactly this question.
  • One other point to consider - if you get the meter changed they'll probably want to install a smart meter - I think they're currently still SMETS1 which would become a dumb meter next time you switch! With the reported questions/problems with "smart" meters, do you really want this?

I'm lucky in that, although a domestic property, we have 3 phase power possibly as we think the house when built had storage heater central heating. There's no 3 phase SMETS1 meter (BG tried and failed to fit one a couple of years ago) and no news of a 3 phase SMETS2 meter thankfully!

Another point is the time of your economy 7 cheap hours. I have an old meter and found the hours have never been changed so my cheap electric is from 6.30pm to 1.30am. Which suits me fine. If/when it needs changing the hours will get set to the proper hours through the night.
