    Thanks for your replies. One thing that just occurred to me. The flue extends through the ceiling of the adjacent bedroom. So I'll need hatches across the ceiling of this room. When i eventually change my boiler, how will the engineer replace the flue through the ceiling? Can they do this through the inspection hatches?

    A new boiler will most likely need a new flue to match. I suspect that would entail ripping down parts of the ceiling so that the flue can be assembled. A few peep holes isn't going to be enough.
    If it sticks, force it.
    If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
