EE increasing call charges.

Just received an email from EE re increasing call charges from 22nd January 2019.

"We wanted to give you plenty of notice about some changes we're making to the price of calls you make from your landline from 22 January 2019.

What's changing?

The price of landline calls that are outside of your allowance, which include:

Call connection fees. These will rise from 21p to 23p

Changes to other call rates including our non-inclusive international call rates.

For more information on our call rates, click here.

We're also introducing a late payment charge of £4 from 23 March 2019 – though if you pay by Direct Debit this won't affect you. If we receive a late payment via cash, credit card or cheque, you'll be charged – so we recommend you switch to Direct Debit."

  • Can't imagine they'll allow early cancellations though ..
  • Even though you have received the email if you ring them upto cancel they will either say you are not materially affected or if you are materially affected they will apply a discount to your account so you no longer are materially affected thus you will not be allowed to cancel.
  • It's a pity as I could probably get a better deal elsewhere.

I'm not unhappy with the service as it is but I could certainly do better.
  • I guess this will affect PAYG customers more as most the contract plans have unlimited allowances to landlines

True but not to mobiles, I am with EE and have inclusive weekend calls to landlines, but it amazes me how after charging around £20 for monthly line rental, landline providers then have the audacity to charge a connection fee, (when using a mobile you are not charged a connection fee even on PAYG), I would have thought the monthly line rental should cover this, then, (with EE), 18ppm to call a landline, when there are mobile PAYG that will only charge 1ppm to call mobiles and landlines without a connection fee,(1p mobile in this instance).

EE offers an anytime inclusive call plan with calls to landline numbers, 03 numbers and mobile numbers.

The wholesale line rental cost isn't £20 it's around £7 to £8, the mark up to £20 ish, is to make broadband seem to be around £5.
If it's as easy as just using (a better value ) mobile, then why to you have a landline, if it's because you have line and broadband for around £25, then you are fooling yourself if you think 'only' £5 is broadband, and if they only got rid of line rental ( because I don't use the phone ) it would only cost £5 a month.
If you don't have broadband and you do pay £20 just for phone, BT line only is around £13.
The problem is that for years companys gave broadband away for free or for peanuts , the true price disguised by having to take other services ( the prices for those other services inflated to disguise the cost of broadband ) , the problem now is a lot of people although thinking broadband is essential , are not prepared to pay much for it, hence the (still) opaque pricing...your choice is simple, don't like landline prices , go totally mobile and pay more for 'data' (but save on a landline costs) or use mobile for phone calls and use landline for broadband only , then the cost of landline calls is irrelevant ,

Virgin will now unbundle the landline from the broadband, they wanted over £30 with the landline and have now agreed to drop the monthly charge to £17 a month because I told them I don’t need or use the landline so it has been cancelled for my new contract.

I will still have a landline though, as because of the ridiculously high prices Virgin charge we’ve been using a VOIP line with a standard 01xx number for the last year from Sipgate that has no monthly charge and UK calls to 01/02/03 are less than 1p a minute.
