Quick question re: impending charge.

This might not be the right place to ask but hopefully someone can help.
Nationwide recently returned a cheque I wrote and have sent a statement saying I will be charged £30 in 28 days.
Now the cheque should have been covered with an electronic transfer I made some days before. However, this seemed to take much longer than normal and was not in the account when the cheque was presented!
This is the first charge I have ever got near to having and I hoped to have it waived. However, on phoning Nationwide they said I had to do it by writing.
In this case, I am intending to tell them that, if they don't send me notice of the charge being waived inside the 28 days I will be closing the account.
Do people think this is a good course of action?

first of all ..did you transfer the money over a weekend??? where or what body did the transfer come from?? I bank with Nationwide and I know if I transfer funds from my account to another account (not being a Nationwide Account) over a weekend it takes an extra working day to clear....On the otherhand, If I transfer money to another internal account, it is done with immediate effect even if it is a weekend. This might not be the right place to ask but hopefully someone can help.

It did go over a weekend but should still have gone through a day earlier than it did. It did come from another bank.
As they wouldn't waive the charge on the phone, is it advisible just to close the account so they can't charge me?0 -
I could be wrong, but I don't think they would let you close the account now as you have the impending charge.I Hate Jobsworths!!!0
