Postage to USA, I got caught out

I put a load of magazines up for sale on ebay and they were very popular with the Americans. I asked £3 for postage to the USA thinking that would easily cover the cost of printed paper rate. Just been to the post office and I am majorly out of pocket. The tiny issues (A5, 48 pages) cost me over £2, the bigger issues were £4 and then there is the cost of the hard backed envelopes and waiting AGEs in the queue in the post office. I feel very stupid.

Magazines and books are really deceptive, I'm always amazed at how much they actually weigh once they are packaged.

Some time ago when I experimented with selling without paypal I listed a whole load of sci fi mags just to get rid of them. I weighed them and rounded up the postage a fraction to take in account the packing costs. Ended up selling them in single lots to various students all of whom sent me postal orders, some of which got lost, some of which were crossed and some of which were for the wrong amount.

The envelopes I had planned to use were a fraction too small, I had stupidly bought envelopes that were only a little bigger than the magazines and forgot to allow for the fact that thick envleopes are smaller inside than out. I ended up buying more expensive envelopes which cost more to post. In total I paid out more to pack and send the magazines in each case than I had received in total from the auction (I had sold them all at starting price).

That's when I decided I couldn't manage without offering paypal (other identical sci fi magazines were selling at more than mine as they had paypal as a payment option) and to make sure I got my packing right before listing and quoting a p and p price. I now also take things to the charity shop rather than sell at all costs and end up with a possible loss.

Looks like you'll have to take the hit on this one as you've stated the P&P on the auction, you could contact the sellers but they'll probably all tell you where to get off!
