Easy solution. 12 easy steps.
1. Walk into PC World. GO up to the Wireless Networking section and buy a Netgear DG834/DG834GT wireless adsl modem router.
2. Go home and unpack it. Connect it to the phone line, after unplugging your old modem, and use the network cable to connect to the laptop.
3. Fire up the laptop. Open web browser and type in http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar. When the username/password box pops up, type in admin as the username and password as the password.
4) On the webpage now displayed, click on Setup Wizard. Make sure the country is set to UK and select "Yes" for the option that has Smart setup wizard detect your connection type. Click Next.
5) wait whilst it does its thing.
6) On the next page that appears, type in your username and password you were given by your ISP for logging onto your broadband then click "Apply".
7) Click on "Wireless Settings" on the left in the Setup section.
8) On the next screen, give your Wifi network a name - this will be seen by others looking to connect.
9) Under "Wireless Access Point", make sure it's enabled.
10) Under "Wireless Security£ make sure its enabled and WPA-PSK is selected. Enter a passphrase in the bottom and remember it as people will need to type it in to connect to the wireless network.
11) Click Apply.
12) Unplug laptop. On laptop, search for wireless networks. Find the one with the name you gave yours in step 8 and click "Connect". It'll ask for the password which is the passphrase you entered in the router in step 11.

first and most important thing to remember..
The software on your computer won't come on the new laptop. If you have Microsoft office / works / any other programs these will need re-installing and you'll need the installation cd's.
Techie bloke won't be able to copy from pc to laptop, he'll only be able to copy documents and photos etc.. Don't be surprised if you get the laptop and there's loads of things missing.0 -
