Early display of Christmas lights only spoil the Special Season attraction. December 1st should be the time for a switch on for houses, shops and towns.
Actually, I don't bother with Christmas lights, just a tree.
But 1st December is way too early for me.
  • Traditionally decorations don’t go up TIL Xmas eve, but we keep this to mean bringing in the greenery. For other decorations I suppose as soon as it gets to December but not before
  • Linked with Xmas celebrations starting too early, they also finish too early! There are supposed to be 12 days of Xmas with 6 Jan as the end date, so celebrations should go on and shops should be closed at least until new year. I hate January sales starting on Boxing Day and as I’m still taking part in traditional community customs on Boxing Day and up to new year I never go to the sales before new year.
  • This is UK. It’s not Santa, it’s Father Christmas! But I agree with your point!
  • While it is a personal choice, of course, switching lights on before Christmas is bringing about changes to our culture and ruining the Christmas season for everyone. Many people are fed up with it all and pull their decorations down on Boxing Day because they’ve been up for a month! The days between Christmas and twelfth night should be the magical time for seeing all the lights!
  • Christmas is not the only winter festival...

I'm way too mean to spend the extra money switching festive lights on early. I imagine the energy companies must be rubbing their hands in glee at the extra income from all those bulbs twinkling away for an entire month or more.

If we're really lucky, we might get a few decorations up by 20th December, just in time for Yule (the festival I celebrate).
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

I love Christmas decorations and lights and always put ours up at the beginning of December.

This year I have treated us to a new tree and decorations. The old ones are, well, old. The new ones should see us out or at least until I'm too old to care;)

The tree was bought online and we carefully assembled it in case of problems and we had to return it. There weren't so it's been sitting in the lounge awaiting decorations. There is a garden centre very close and they have the most stunning, multi award winning Christmas display I've ever seen so I splashed out on a few and topped them up with some equally stunning ones but cheaper from TKMaxx :D

The old ones will go in our communal lounge so technically it's recycling. I have a small pink tree I bought years ago for £2 in Tesco and OH has always hated it (he says it's tasteless and I don't doubt it but it's a little thing and mine own) and this year he's threatened to bin it. Another one for the communal lounge.

One of the residents has had a tree up since the beginning of November but as he is over 90 I don't blame him, sadly it could be his last Christmas:(

May I be the first to wish you all a happy, peaceful and prosperous Christmas.
