QQ about backdated car tax.

Firstly, I don't drive so I apologise if any of these questions seem a bit stupid or obvious.
You don't do it at the Post Office anymore, I assume, so If you don't have a logbook (lost) can you call the DVLA and tax a car immediately with a debit card and ask for a new logbook at the same time (with a different address)? (he has a green slip but apparently that's the wrong thing?)
If you owe backdated car tax and you call the DVLA to tax the car immediately (as above) will they require the backdated tax to be paid before taxing the vehicle now, or does that come later in the form of fines / penalty charge letters?
Thanks
EDIT : Also, can you even do any of this if it's not your car, is that allowed?

The V5C/2 green slip saves £25 on the replacement.EDIT : Also, can you even do any of this if it's not your car, is that allowed?0 -
No. The keeper needs to do it. I guess it's your son? He needs to learn to stand on his own two feet and take on his own responsibilities in such basics of adult life.0

Nephew, he's having a bit of a tough time at the moment so I took him for a pint yesterday and all of this came to light ... long story, but got out of an abusive relationship (she stabbed him with a pen) and I just found out he was living in his car (with no tax).
I totally get where you're coming from, I can't believe it's gone this far, he's usually pretty sensible, got an Honours degree in some Media thing, he's a good kid, not one of those "yobbos", just having a bit of a mental breakdown at the moment I think, so I was gonna try and sort at least this one thing out and give him a place to stay while he gets it all sorted, couple less things to worry about. I'm just trying to help him out, by no means am I making excuses for his actions (or lack thereof)
So If I give him my card, he can phone them and sort out the tax with my card? (without the logbook or reminder?) and then we go to the Post Office to get a replacement V5 with the address changed from his ex's with the green slip thing?.
Or does he need to get the V5 before he can tax it in any way?
(V5 is what they used to call the logbook, is that correct?)
What about the back tax, do they ask for that now or does that come later?
(I'm just trying to work out how much it will cost to do it today)0 -
Well, I just called them and they said I can't tax the vehicle without the V5, so need to keep the car off the road and get that ordered.0

Not just kept off road
Needs to be sorn too0 -
But I can't do that either without a V11 or V5?0
-
OP, if you can get the car off the road, as Quentin says, SORN it too - Statutory Off Road Notification - basically telling them it's parked up off road so tax isn't needed. Once you get the V5 you can tax it. Good on you for helping him out.
In terms of back tax, they usually cancel the road tax for the previous owner (if there is any) when they are notified of a change of keeper, and the new keeper becomes responsible for the new tax. If they haven't had a new keeper notification, then it might just have been taxed from the previous keeper e.g. if they paid for 6 months in advance. You'll find out when you get it all sorted. Hopefully for him they'll take his liability from when they change the keeper.0 -
go to https://sorn.service.gov.uk and you can use the V5C/20

They dont have the V5C though.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
We do have the Green new keeper slip, but when I tried to use the document reference on there is didn't work ... I guess because a V5C was issued after that, so technically that slip is void now because it was superseded by the V5C that's now lost (at least, that's what we think the issue is)0
