Audi A4 Avant 2012 Cambelt cracking after 1 year

I recently took my car to be serviced and have an MOT at my local garage and have been advised the cambelt needs replacing and is cracking although according to the dealership service records it was replaced 12 months ago (along with water pump) @ 52k miles, is this possible to have degraded so much in 1 year? The car is an automatic 2012 Audi a4 diesel estate, bought in April 2018, full dealership service history, 55k miles when bought, now @ 63k miles.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

If you trust your garage get it done.

My bet is they never took the cover off and see it as an easy £400.

    There are four options.
    1. Faulty parts were fitted.
    2. The record was falsified.
    3. The garage are fibbing.
    4. There's confusion between the cambelt and the auxiliary belt.

    2.0TDi, I presume?
  • Thanks for your reply, yes it's a 2.0TDi, i'll go to get another opinion at a different garage and see what they say, i'd hate to think the Audi dealership charged the previous owner £650 and didn't do the work!

Would you hate it more than your garage being dishonest?
  • I think i'd be equally annoyed!

It seems odd for a garage to remove the cambelt cover and inspect the belt visually as its not part of the service unless you asked them specifically?

If there is history of a cambelt change the garage wouldn’t even think of checking its condition as its a timed/distance interval.

I can only think they are talking about aux belt.

ermmmm... i think your garage is telling you porky's mate on the, on the audi a4 07 plate the front end has to come off to that job, it was a pig of a job when i did it a few years ago, im not sure if its the same on the 2012 but my guess is it will be, the chances that the garage did any striiling to inspect the belt without you acutally telling them to is very slim, i think they have just gone buy the age for the car at the current miles and just said oh it needs the belt doing

Unless they can show you proof that it needs doing i would get a second opinion, or just tell them that it has been done at audi last year at 55k and watch the reaction

Might be the same as VW, two years warranty on timing belt changes. I'd be checking with Audi.
    Possibly they're trying it on?
Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience?

Why? So you can argue with them?

As mentioned already could you be getting the cam belt and auxiliary/ sepentine belt mixed up.

Water pump is normally driven by the aux belt so it would make sense that they were replaced together.

On most cars its the cambelt now which is why you change the waterpump at the same time as the labour costs to do the water pump are the same as doing the cambelt.
