Hi

Technophobe here.

I've had an alert from AVG saying my internet surfing is not encrypted and I can easily be hacked by anyone with a bit of no how and all my information, including banking etc is public.

Feeling really concerned by this. How can I protect myself?

AVG is offering VPN at £1.49 per month. Do I need this? If I have this, will this also stop the junk email (or greatly reduce it)? Will a VPN protect me from being hacked?

Many thanks

Stop using AVG, use another AV, Microsoft Essentials is one, Avast is another.

I dont have my VPN switched yet I'm perfectly fine.
  • You will find that “all” web sites are becoming encrypted as standard. Browsers, such as Firefox, will warn about insecure sites.

If you are worried about your ISP recording every site you visit (the Government Snoopers Charter), then by all means use a VPN... make sure the VPN isn’t supplied by a Government Dept masquerading as the VPN provider though.

And use a VPN who don't create logs.
  • Hi

I'm not worried about the sites I visit being recorded - just worried that someone can hack my internet and steal data such as bank passwords etc because I dont have a VPN. Is a VPN necessary to protect myself?

I use my mobile phone often for internet banking and wonder should a virus protector on my phone - its an android.

Yeah, you don't trust your ISP then you decide to trust a random VPN provider based somewhere in China, Russia, India and give them all your details and browsing info.
