ABS locks

I am wanting to buy a matching lock, so that I just need one set of keys.
But the ebay key/lock seller says that I must register online. They do seem like a good lock, that is difficult for thieves, but registering online just gives those online my name and key number.

Are these locks batter than the rest, as they cannot be copied without the code number?

  • Why do you think the locks are so much better than other locks that do not require you to have such information on line?

If you just have the one house, then you only have limited experience, just asking.
  • If your just looking to have the same keys for both front and back doors there are plenty of options,

    For example https://www.trulypvc.com/locks-security/euro-cylinders/high-security/yale-superior-keyed-alike-euro-cylinder-pair

That is what I wanted, just one key for the whole house. I was trying to do it by getting a new lock for the back door and matching it to the front.
But it may be simpler to buy two new matching locks with keys.

I also want another key for the back door, but I dont have the card with the code on it.

    Avocet ABS over Yale anytime.

You won't get a key for your existing ABS lock without the card.

I know it sounds cool, but I decided against keyed alike for the simple reason, if you loose a key, all the keyed alike locks need changing :(

If you're concerned about retailers having your address, get them ordered by and delivered to a friend or relative. I've done it for a few friends.

Its optional to register the code. I just keep the keycard for mine in the safe.

That is something that I had not thought of. Also a concideration, should I buy locks with thumb locks - lockable from the inside without the key.
    A luxury not needed, perhaps.

ABS lock, plus 5 keys = £50, ebay.

Thumb locks give intruders an easy way out (or a number of easy ways out) especially if they gained entry through a window. Much easier to run off with your 60" telly etc, and much easier to make a quick exit (in various directions) should they need to.
I never leave keys in any doors if no one is home.

Just my personal thoughts, maybe I'm over thinking it :)

ABS with 3 keys are ~£38 and to get extra keys cut appears to be ~£7 each so £50 with 5 keys sounds right as your buying them all at once.
  • I thought I would post this here to provide my recent experience of Avocet.

I bought three Avocet ABS locks a couple of years ago. The lock on the front door has broken in that a piece of the lock around 1cm in length has come lose and fallen off. The entire EXT section hasn't snapped off as designed to do when attacked its just a smaller barrel shaped bit has come out. It hasn't been attacked and in fact nothing actually seems broken but its not clear how to put it back together again.

I purchased this lock with a Manufacturer Guarantee. Now they don't want to know. They won't consider repairing or replacing and ask me to go back to the retailer. The reailier is on their approved list but they ask me to go back to the manufacturer..... (!)

So unless I can be bothered filing a small claim I will have to buy a new lock keyed to the same as the other locks we bought.

Avocet isn't the cheapest brand. Their lock should not fall apart with normal wear and tear and they should provide better customer service than this.

I’m not surprised by Michael1234’s experience of an Avocet ABS falling apart. While Avocet makes decent lock cylinders, they’re not top quality. (Neither is Yale.)

For similar money, a Mul-T-Lock Breaksecure 3DS would be a step up in quality, reliability and key security.

For more money, either a Kaba pExtra Guard or an Evva EPS 3-star would be a big step up in quality, reliability and key security.

Key security for the Avocet ABS isn’t what it used to be, now that key blanks have become more readily available. Unlike the aforementioned lock cylinders, anyone can legally copy an ABS key without the code card.
