I've had an old BT Lyric 1100 duo for many years which has served me well and has excellent sound quality though very basic.

After my new puppy decided to eat one of the handsets I'm now looking for a new cordless phone set with answer machine and nuisance call blocking for around £50 - £80.

The BT 8500 or 8600 look favourites but are old models now.

I've looked at the reviews for both BT and Panasonic and notice that sound quality seems to be an issue with many.

Some say the sound quality is superb, great, crystal clear for a particular model and then others say it's terrible or muffled. It makes it very difficult to decide on which make/model to go for.

Any thoughts and experiences would be welcome.

In my experience the call quality can vary a lot with cordless phones depending on locations of handsets, numbers of handsets, interference from other devices. With the possible exception of software for call blocking, I don't think the technology for cordless handsets really changes much so I wouldn't think there's much difference between this years model or last years model from a call quality point of view.

As I understand it, there is call blocking options that are handset related, and other options that are network (provider) driven, so once you've figured which route you want to go for, I would just pick a phone and go for it.

You could try buying a phone from Argos for example, and then you can return if it's not suitable. Or postage costs aren't that expensive if you order online and the retailer offers return options.

I've got a Binatone triple set that's good call quality if that helps, so I would imagine you've got lots of options!
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • Thanks for your thoughts and experiences.

I'm with Talk Talk and have been using their various call blocking features which have been free up to now, however they're starting to charge for them so thought, as I need a new phone anyway, I would move over to handset blocking.

I cancelled the Anonymous Caller Reject boost last week and I haven't had any unknown calls come through since. I gave their Call Safe feature a try but it didn't work properly for me for some reason.

I'll have look at the Binatone range and see what they have to offer.
  • We tend to go for the "BT" models, they are good sound quality. TBH the phones are pretty similar across most makes these days, you just have to go for the features you are after.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
  • You can go for sony if you are looking for the features that you mentioned you want. I will let you know the best model shortly.

Have you replied to the wrong message, don't think Sony make cordless phones anymore.
