Smart Meters and PV solar

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/11/09/households-solar-panels-risk-overcharged-smart-meters/

An Ofgem spokesman said it was aware some energy firms were using estimates rather than the actual amounts for households' energy sent the grid.

He said: "We understand that this is because, at the moment, the supplier can’t always access the export meter readings. We expect suppliers to work to resolve this issue."

A BEIS spokesperson said energy firms were to blame, saying: “Smart meters are compatible with microgeneration, including solar panels."

Guess who pays?

  • Hi,

    First time poster here.
I also read this Telegraph article the other day. Unfortunately, we just got our Eon smart meter installed last week!!!

I am now thinking about getting the installation undone (?) not sure if this is possible and on what grounds would I be able to do this?

I note that the article states that Eon are refusing to install meters where households have solar panels! I did mention at the time (prior to arranging installation) that I had solar panels (Feed In Tariff through EON) and asked whether there would be issues. The Eon person I spoke to said there would be no issue!

After reading the article, I'm still a bit confused with exactly how the smart meter affects the Feed In Tariff OR the amount the panels are generating. I am now worried that I am losing out. Is there a way of checking this? What can I do?

It doesn't affect the FIT and export rates which are set by Government. What it does affect is the assumed 50% rate for export payments. People with smart meters should only be paid for the actual amount of kWhs that are exported to the Grid: which to me seems fair.

You could guarantee if the suppliers were actually paying for FiTs etc, then this would not be an issue. FITs are paid for by all energy consumers.
