He had £25 a week and managed it well, bought his bus pass, give one third to his mum and split what was left into spending money and holiday savings. I met him about 5 years later, he had a good job earning about 14 or 15 times more, was still living at home and he was in debt. He said he had never been as well off as when he was on £25 a week. He suddenly had money and started spending, getting a car on credit, spending on a credit card because he could afford it and suddenly he was drowning in debt.
I went on a YTS doing hairdressing, got £25 a week, gave Mum £10 n went out most nights .Looking back it seems unbelievable"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Morning all!...
I am off this morning to but some new curtains for my living room. When I moved here I couldn't use my old curtains (far too short!) and so was very happy to be given a couple of pairs for the kitchen and lounge (bedroom I DID manage with an old pair I had)...the kitchen ones are actually quite lovely....but the living room ones were never to my taste..a coupl eof years after the move, and I am now ready for new curtains!...Something subtle and understated (I will keep my pretty nets with a butterfly/floral design and don't want anything too 'busy' to clash)
Oh...and yesterday Mum and I went to M&S...we had been given a coupon for 20% off all clothing and home items...including Christmas stuff (linked to the Sparks card)….the 20% was on top of the in-store offer of 3 for2...so we picked up a few real Christmas bargains!..and when we paid, the till spat out a coupon for each of us to use next week...£5 off a £35 shop on food...I will check the t&c to see if this can be used for our Christmas meat pre-order (we are having venison again this year...yum!)0 -
My "Champagne" moment for today was having the time to watch a most beautiful winter sunset. It was glorious:D
candygirl - my first "proper" job the summer I left school gave me £43 a week in my hand. I gave £10 to my Mum for my keep, was £5 in fares, saved £15 and had the rest for me. I have never felt so well-off! Mind you 3 halves of lager and lime could be bought for £1;)0 -
My moment was using a voucher from the train company (from a terrible journey months ago) to go to a nearby city to visit the Christmas Market. It was very nice, so pretty all lit up and lovely music and fantastic atmosphere. I didn't buy anything but thoroughly enjoyed myself.0

Treated myself to a box of my favourite chocolates today as they are on offer at the moment. I only buy them when they're on offer and are a very occasional treat as each one is quite large, so a couple of boxes will last me until around this time next year2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

They're quite large with a very intense flavour and covered in dark chocolate (95% cocoa solids) - utterly delicious but impossible to eat more than one at a time. I have one occasionally, usually in place of a dessert. There's only 11 in a box and I only buy them when they're on offer, usually just during the run up to Christmas, so I have to make 2 boxes last at least a year2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

Good morning everyone
Some lovely "champagne moments". Thank you for sharing.
I think the whole point of luxury on a budget is the ability to actually stop and savour the moment. Time to stand and stare.
And it neednt cost a penny. A sunset, a sunrise, a starry sky, a meteor shower, a harvest supermoon, the glorious autumn colours, tree blossom in spring, the green of the countryside, snow on the hills, a beautiful beach .....so many wonderful sights, sounds and smells in nature.
I too never have puddings. A single piece of good quality chocolate savoured with a cup of good coffee does it for me. It's enough to satisfy without triggering carb cravings. Now I find most puddings and ordinary milk chocolates are just unbearably sweet.
Yesterday I made myself some body oil and some facial oil, using only natural aromatherapy oils. Natures goodness and No nasty chemicals and of course as cheap as chips.
Well the monster conifers are gone and light now floods into my garden and the back of my house. No more Miss Haversham gloom.:rotfl: in the spring I will plant some nice trees and bushes once the soil has been replenished and allowed to recover.
The fencing guys are coming back today so I doubt I will manage the cinema after all. Doesn't matter.
Only 6 sleeps till my holiday and I still have loads to do so today I'm going to crack on.
Have a lovely day.0 -
LL you have done it again, with such flair and panache.
This is going to be another really great thread to be a part of.
No matter what income I have, I make every penny and pound stretch as far as it will go.0
