Hello.

Last week my old man called me and said his outside security light was not working when went to put the bins out so i said i would have a look at the weekend.

The halogen 400 watt bulb had blown. It had done well as it was in there for over 8 years.

I can get a replacement bulb for the light but he mentioned about getting a led low watt equivilent to what he has now as he has a lot of foxes entering the garden and setting off the light and he is worried about the electric bill.

A few years back i did put in a 200 watt bulb but he said that was not bright enough to see well as he has a shed and garage at the side of the house that he wants covered by the light.

Can anybody reccomend a bright light that is equal to a 400 watt 8500lm or there abouts please.

You might want to start with a LED replacement lamp (available online, or from places like Toolstation). These simply slot in, in place of the halogen lamp.

8500lm is a lot... you'd be spending a considerable amount of money to get to that level. But my experience changing my parent's outdoor lights is that LED lighting appears much 'brighter' than halogen lighting, and the more common complaint is the new light is 'too bright'.

Hence my suggestion of trying a LED replacement lamp first... higher power LED floodlights will have non-replaceable lamps, so if you buy one which is not bright enough/too bright then the whole unit needs to be changed.

At least with the LED replacement lamp you have the option of quickly going back to a 400w halogen lamp if the new one doesn't suit. ;)

  • You can get very good solar pir units not for around £20

I have recently installed a LAP floodlight, this is a more powerful one:

The above is 50w 4000lm mine is 20w 1600lm but it is bright enough to light up half the garden

Two lamps placed carefully will reduce shadows and choose daylight colour lamps (high degrees K) for best illumination such as two 50w floods with reflectors.

Thank you for all the replies.

I thought of led replacement bulb but they cost from £5 upwards and he would rather put that money towards a new light.

As for solar lights his garden is mostly north facing where he needs the light to cover so that will not be an option.

I replace a number of 500W floods with 50W LED floods with good results. I used 4000K temperature lights which are whiter than the old halogens, but no blue tinge.

I've just replaced a 250w with a 30w LED and the LED gives much more light. No problem with the PIR detecting 15m from the light.

Yesterday i was looking online at 50 watt LED lights and also the 4000K option. I know what you mean by the higher rating as i have had a 12 watt bulb in my lounge and they were very bright but we could not get on with them so went back to the 4000K and so far were are happy with them.

The blue tinge must be the same as my dads neighbour at the back of him who has a bright security light shining onto his back garden and house even though he must be 100 yards from my dads house. He went round to that house 2/3 months ago to ask them to adjust the light so it shines onto their lawn and not his house as the light is nearly parralel with the wall and is 2/3 feet away from the eaves but they people living there made out it's nothing to do with them.

This is why I think you might be best spending the £5 on a replacement lamp rather than a whole new light as it will be cheaper and involve less work when he decides he doesn't like the new one for some reason and wants to go back to halogen. (Nothing against your dad, but my experience of older people's views about modern 'bright' LED lighting)

  • Daylight colour are pretty harsh and unpleasant indoors. Good as work lights though.
