Windows Media Player not working in Mozilla Firefox or IE Web Browser

My problem is that I cannot view videos in my web browser (Mozilla, however, I also tried Internet Explorer and this also does not work). I have the plugin activated for Mozilla too. I discovered that this was because I have a problem with Windows Media Player (WMP).
In Firefox, I am stuck with a white screen and audio files.
In IE i just got a black screen and no sound.
I have taken out a search for WMP in my directory and it doesn't exist. However, when i tried to download another version from Microsoft's site (WMP 11) I was given the following message during setup
"There is a more recent version of WMP (11.0.6000.6344) on your computer. It is not possible to use an older installation package (11.0.5721.5146) to install files or to repair your current version of the player"
The message is claiming i have a version already on my system. I have searched and explored and found nothing.
I am running on Windows Vista Home Premium. i have Windows Media Centre pre-installed but i'm guessing this is something seperate.
I found a response here to someone else's problem which seemed to match mine. However, the answer given is too complicated for me to understand (follow the links within the thread).

If I could understand how to follow his instructions, I think this would work.
