They have the legal right to change the meter if they deem it necessary and could get a warrant to do so, at a cost to you, if you flatly refused them entry. You do not have to have a smart meter but they can fit a smart meter in dumb mode, that is without the communication hub enabled, if they wish.

They can fit a smart meter in dumb mode without permission?

Why not, it is then just a "meter" and they choose the type of meter not you.
  • All meters have a certified lifespan. The energy companies can replace any meter that is at its end of life period. You cannot stop that from happening.
You can ask for the new meter (which will most likely be a smart meter) to be installed in dumb mode which blocks its communication to the outside world.
The new meters have much shorter lifespans as they were made cheaply so will be changed more often.
Ironic that a 25 year old meter may still be well within its certified lifespan while a 10 year old one wont be.

Please post a legible image of one of those letters that you assert states this.

If you were in any doubt as to what the law is on this, wouldn't it have been better to clarify this for yourself before sending off "a email with I don't want a smart meter at all blah blah blah" ?

Hello chuffmalloy and already some excellent advice on here - thanks all.

To confirm, smart meters are optional and you can turn down our offer to replace your existing prepayment meters with smart meters.

Is the letter we've sent because the existing meters have reached the end of their guaranteed life?
