Removing name from "joint" utility bills

Please help.

How can I remove my name from utility bills where my flat mate is supposed to pay the bills; however hasn't done so and as built up debts... and I'm only just finding out the bill was put in my name as well, despite me never seeing any communications before in 2 years and not signing a contract.

What can I do; amount is for just under £1,000.

Y23A - what was the arrangement between you and your flatmate as to how much you would pay ?

Very unusual for joint names to be on a bill - are you sure.

No-one signs a written contract for a utility supply - either phone or online .
