Aqua credit card - switching - please help

Hiya,
I had a bad credit rating previously however have started to build it up again recently. 6 months ago I got the Aqua Classic card and have paid all bills back in full and have had my credit rating increased. I have also paid off my overdraft with my bank.
I am now planning on travelling and living abroad for a year from December. For security I want a credit card I can use abroad. I am pretty certain I will get rejected for the majority of the main credit cards which are best for abroad use. Aqua however have the Aqua Reward which doesn’t charge when used abroad.
My understanding however is that you can only have one card with Aqua (or NewDay) at once meaning I will have to cancel my current card and then apply for an Aqua Reward. Clearescore tell me I have a 70% chance of approval however my worry is, if I get rejected then I am completely without a credit card.
Has anyone done the same thing and been successful/unsuccessful? Or does anyone have any advice on what to do?

Thanks in advance!

  • Who told you that you can only have the one card? Have you rung Aqua and asked them whether you can either have a second card with 0% foreign transactions, or whether the card you have can be switched into a Reward or Advance card?

  • Thank you!

When I contacted Aqua to see if I could transfer they replied with this:

can confirm that your aqua classic card cannot be upgraded or changed to any other aqua card.

If you wish to apply for an aqua reward card, you will need to close the above account and then apply online via our website

We cannot guarantee that your application will be successful

Also when you apply you have to check a box that's says you have no other cards with them.

Have you looked at something like the MSE Credit Club to see if there's another card that you're eligible for? The Aqua card's interest is really high, after 6 months you could be eligible for something with a lower APR??
  • Correct you can only hold one Aqua (or indeed, NewDay) card at any time.

Try an eligibility checker for a different card or look into getting a Curve Card or a Starling or Revolut account

I have just been approved (today) for the amazon platinum card and i already have the aqua card, both are newday cards.

When applying for the cards one of the questions is "are your circumstances going to change in the near future"
if you are moving abroad this will be a change in circumstances.
  • IMO if you have a flakey credit history - do not cancel your existing card.
As you have been informed there is no guarantee you will get another one - then what will you do?
  • there are a few other suppliers out there for international purchases/transactions with zero fees.

nationwide have a decent one, but need to be a current account holder with them.

Tandem also do a "bad credit" card as well with no transaction fees for travel - APR 24.9

use MSE eligibility checker, and select travel cards and have a read of them... make sure though you dont apply for a card that has a monthly or annual fee!
