Debit card fraud

I've just found out that there were several transactions using a debit card which came out of my currentl account to almost £2,000 over the weekend. I cancelled it late last night but what about the money already taken out? Can I get that money back? I have reported it to Abbey and I guess I've got to wait now?
Some of the transactions were conducted in Spain and the Phillippines - cash were withdrawn and stuff bought (even an hotel room was reserved and paid for with my card!). My account is cleaned out meaning my mortgage payment has not been paid today! Argh!!
I'm wondering whether you know of anything like that happening to other people and what did they do? I suspect that this happened when I was in Mallorca as I could not place where else it could have happened. Someone has obviously got a copy of my card somehow and went spending!! I still have the original card here with me.

No reliance should be placed on the above.

yes providing you cancel the card at the searliest opportunity when you realise there is a problem - which it appears you have - then you arent liable.
sounds like the card has been cloned and if you have been in spain recently then thats the likely explanation.
in the meantime while you are awaiting a refund, ask abbey if you can have a temporary overdraft (or extension) to tide you over or if they can make a credit to your account pending investigation.
any charges you incur (eg for mortage payment bouncing etc) should be waived once investigation is complete.

This happened to my sister when she was on holiday in Barcelona last year, fortunately for my sister, the bank called her and asked her about some transactions made on her card that day and quickly realised that it was due to cloning. She had her card replaced quickly and didnt have to pay the costs.
Anyway, as far as I am aware, Banks are usually pretty quick and good about it, just make sure that you get a statement and highlight everything you didnt do, so that you have a record incase the bank misses one.

A similar thing happened to me last year.
I do not know how they managed to get my details but a few transactions were made over the internet adding up to £1000 and clearing my overdraft.
I closed that account to prevent any further transactions going through and opened another student current account (moved from Bank of Scotland to RBS).
After calling the bank (BoS) to inform them of the fraud and making a statement to the police, I waited 6 weeks and the money was refunded and the account was finally closed.0 -
Hey, Abbey refunded all the fraud transactions and have promised to refund me any costs occured as result of being overdrawn. I must say that I was impressed with their customer service, sympathetic approach and the speed in the responses. I didn't even have to obtain a police report or anything!
