Trouble loading XP operating system software

Friend’s harddrive is full of viruses etc. He is running wins98. Easiest route is to reformat it and install XP Home operating software.
The harddrive (HD) is set as master.
The CD writer is set as master on a separate ribbon.
The bootup order is to read the CD, floppy drive then the HD.
Put the XP disc in the CD drive and restarted the pc. Normally you will see instructions asking if you want to install the XP software etc. What came up instead is wins98 and the pc started as it does normally. I changed all bootup to read from CD only but with the same result.
I cannot get the pc to bootup from the CD. With the wins98 running if I click on ‘my computer’ and then the CD drive it starts the installation program for the XP.
Tried the XP disc on another PC and it works.
What should I do now?

So why not just run the installation like that?
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Normally when you have it set for boot CD, it will ask when you rebooted whether to boot from CD you have about 20 secs to press a key before it then reloads the OS you have on board0

Found out what the problem was. His XP disc would not work on his PC. I put in my XP home disc and it booted from it. Strange because there is no scratches etc on his disc and it works fine on my pc.

His computer is suitable to run XP Home. His ram is 512mb which in my mind is the minimum. See how the pc runs for normal websurfing etc. If they find it too slow then i will upgrade the RAMProblem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems

Just as an aside, just been given an old PC (was looking for SDRAM) booted it, found it was dual booting Win98 and XP home.
Not bad for 350mhz and 64(yes)mb ram.
Bit slow on XP, grew beard while waiting for anything to happen!Move along, nothing to see.0 -

How much did you think Windows was? Bearing in mind that Windows XP and Vista were likely the most costly software projects in history."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
