Camera records, laser measures the speed and records it on the video.
  • Yes, but that is my question. Do you know if one of those vans that has a camera above the windscreen, not inside, it’s actually above the windscreen with a little window that opens up like they do at the back, do you know what that does? Does it just record or is that a laser as well which measures the speed?

Do you have a picture of such a vehicle?
  • Home Office FOI response -

"The Home Office does not explicitly prohibit use of laser devices through closed windows or from moving vehicles. Officers, however, are expected to consider the guidance offered in the ACPO document Guide for the operational use of speed and red-light offence detection technology which advises against the use of laser speedmeters through glass or plastic screens, and only describes usage from a fixed point on the side of the road."

    ACPO guideline:

"Laser speedmeters must not be used through glass or plastic screens ..."
  • It was this one. As you can see at the front it has the same black window that opens up as in the back.

It looks like it should open. Why not contact the force and ask them?
  • Well I know it open because it was open. The question was if anyone knows what it’s used for? Is it just a camera to record once you’ve been caught with the back laser or is it a laser as well.

See #2 and you have your answer.

The camera records the full enforcement session the operator uses the laser. Every time they form the opinion someone is exceeding the speed limit they pull the trigger and activate the laser. This measures speed and time stamps the video.

They may however be using it for anpr.

The same camera is used from either the rear or front window. Which window is used depends on operational requirements.
