matelodave - thanks. I ask this out of curiosity, who is responsible for providing the final readings. Is it the sole responsibility of the new supplier or the customer?

Read the link at Post 5. The Gaining supplier has the Licence responsibility for managing all aspects of a transfer of supply which includes getting industry verified meter readings to open and close accounts. If the customer gives transfer readings, these still have to be verified as some people misread their meters - either by mistake or because they think they can make a few £s by doing so. If the industry estimates are outwith certain limits, either supplier can raise an Agreed Readings Dispute.

If a customer provides the old supplier with final readings, these should be ignored if there is a transfer in progress.

The customer has to give the opening reading to the gaining supplier who then should pass to the losing supplier.

Look at the link on Hengus' post no #5 above to see the process. If you didn't give a reading for whatever reason then the process doesn't work properly especially if the guessimate from a new supplier is lower than the one that the previous supplier or the verifier has got. That's why it's up to the customer to provide an accurate reading and to check that it (or one that's fairly close to it) was used by both suppliers - preferably at the time so any anomolies can be sorted out.

Re your comment about back-billing - it doesn't apply in this case as you had a bill which is being corrected. The supplier has up to six years to correct it if it was wrong.

Cardew - we didn't expect anything from them and were (until yesterday) wholly ignorant of the process. We assumed you switch providers; a final bill is made; you pay it; you use your new suppliers tariff. I did not expect a new revised final bill 12 months later for £200 because of this bonkers switch over process.

I appreciate you were 'wholly ignorant of the process' and my post was to explain the process and the situation from Bulb's perspective.

The switch over process is not 'Bonkers'. Millions of customers use it without difficulty. However - not unreasonably - it relies on the customer knowing which meter belongs to their property.

BG had accepted in December 2017 reading 9253 as the final reading and raised a final bill. By not disputing that final bill you had also acceped the bill, albeit couldn't check it as you didn't know which was your meter.

Had you not disputed your increasing direct debits with Bulb you would have paid Bulb, and not BG, for the unpaid gas you had consumed.
