No. Income Support entitles you to free dental care.

That's what I thought but my dentist says I have to pay a nhs dentist. They want me to pay £45 next week for a filling and I have been paying £14 for check ups.

Suggest you show them a copy of your current IS award letter and the page pmlindyloo has linked to.

They say everyone has to pay something. They only charged my partner £14 for a filling a couple of months ago and I have to pay £45. When we joined the we told them we were on benefits and the receptionist said I will put you on the nhs list. They give us a blue form to check and sign

Some dentists take fee exempt NHS patients (income support, etc) and others take fee paying NHS ( 3 seperate bands of payment depending on treatment) and some take a combination and others only private if that’s allowed in their region.

£45 is band 2 of fee paying NHS you need to ask your dentist are you registered as an NHS exempt patient, since you filled the form out and they accepted it you should be.

  • to resurrect this slightly what if you are between JSA's? contribution based has finished and I am waiting a decision on my application for income based JSA - can I get free dental now that I am off contribution or do i need proof that I have no income at present?

If possible I suggest delaying treatment until you have confirmation of income based JSA. If you can't i think you have to pay but you need to get a receipt and will be able to claim a refund for NHS treatment once you have proof of benefit. See bottom of this page https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/help-with-health-costs/get-help-with-dental-costs/.
