Cannot get PC to see Kindle

I download books from Amazon using my local wifi and my Amazon account. This is no problem. What I had done in this case was to download a couple of books from Gutenberg, in .mobi format, onto my PC and then connected the kindle to my PC intending to download them onto it.
The problem is that my PC cannot see my kindle as an external device whatever I do for that to happen. (I have changed cables, changed ports but it makes no difference.) All that happens is that when I connect the Kindle to PC via the USB cable, it displays the following message: "If you want to read or shop on your Kindle while continuing to charge over USB, please keep the USB cable attached, but eject your Kindle from your computer." The Kindle is not seen as an external device on the PC. It does not appear as an external hard drive or as a device in the control panel.
I have tried all the above suggestions, except I have not yet downloaded the suggested driver. I posted a message on the Kindle User Forum UK but got no replies.0 -
Initially my new kindle fire was not recognised on my win 10 pc but changing from usb2 to usb3, it suddenly appeared as a Fire device.
Is that any help?0 -

A short term way round the problem would be to email the .mobi books to your Kindle's email address (look on your Amazon account online under manage your content and devices if you don't already know it). They should then be delivered via wi-fi the same way as a book you'd bought from Amazon.0 -
Thanks for that mac.d. I managed to email the downloaded book to my kindle address and then it appeared on my kindle device.0
