Impossible To Change Address with DVLA

Hi

I am having a ridiculous time trying to change my address with the DVLA (Road Tax and Driving Licence).

It is saying I need a government Gateway ID. I save all stuff like that, and I only have 2 long numbers saved, and it's not accepting those. It's saying it should be numbers and letters.

So it gives me the option of getting a new Gateway ID but only if I input my password, email and two security questions. I know I have got them all correct , but it still won't let me in!

Is it possible to change my address without doing it online?

Also, do I have to send off my Driver's Licence? It's a pretty important document, and lately I can't pick up parcels from the Sorting Office without it. (I don't have a passwort).

So I would rather not send off my original driver's licence. (The photo doesn't need changing).

Thanks a lot

Can't you just get a d741 and do it that way?

You’ll also need one of the following items:

    Credit or debit card
Bank or building society cheque/savings book
    Valid passport
    Driving licence
    NHS medical card
Photo ID card (foreign national, military, police warrant, Royal Mail employee, NHS or senior citizen bus pass)

How do you change the address on a document without them having the document?

    Hi thanks,

The site has let me in now.

And I was able to update my address. Cool.

But it says cut your old licence up and send it to DVLA. Fair enough, but

    1. Can I wait til I get my new one?

    2. Will my new one be a photo card?
    Or a paper licence?

Because I need the photocard licence to pick up parcels. As it's my only Photo ID, they don't accept anything else?!

    Thank you

    So its still nonsense.
Did you even read the link to the RM site or the list of ID I gave you?

Does the card say photo ID only?

    Yes.

They haven't issued non-photocard licences since the 1990s.

How do you change the address on a document without them having the document?

Hi, only just seen this, as our posts overlapped. Yes, those do seem to be the official rules for Royal Mail saying we only need ONE of those IDs, but there is a notice in my sorting office (typed on an A4 sheet) saying we need Photo ID plus one other ID such as a bill.

The irony is; I thought our addresses weren't on the Driving Licence, til just now when I looked. And my sorting office has been accepting this Photo ID with the OLD address on for several weeks now! So they obviously didn't read the address! :o

I just called DVLA now, and I do have to be without it til I get my new one. Oh well :(

    Thanks for your help

AGAIN (sheesh) Read the link I have supplied.
That ID requirement relates to collecting for other people and don't have ID for them.
If you're collecting mail for someone else, please bring the Something for you card (or electronic SMS/email notification) and one of the above forms of ID, in the name of the person the item is addressed to.

If you can’t bring any of the above ID in the name of the person the item is addressed to, you can still collect. This also applies if you are collecting an item addressed to a child.

    You’ll need to bring:

The Something for you card (or electronic SMS/email notification)
Your photo ID (driving licence*, passport, foreign national ID, military ID card, police warrant card, Royal Mail employee card, NHS medical card or senior citizen bus pass)
Proof you live at the address on the Something for you card (driving licence*, bank statement, television licence, utility bill or home insurance certificate)
    * We will accept a photocard driving licence as both photo ID and proof of address.
Please note: we can only accept only original, recent documents.

if you have a red RM card then the address on your licence is irrelevant if its is under the correct name. Hence with a debit card is accepted.

Thanks yes they say it will be a Photo ID card, and that they stopped doing the paper ones.

But they also said I can't keep my old one til I get the new one, as they need the old one before they send the new one.

  • I can see the OP's position with the royal mail sorting office, Some managing staff take it upon themselves to enforce a photo ID only policy in the sorting office when they think they have a bit of power.

I have had this issue with a local one to me, and I have called royal mail infront of rude belligerent staff and had them do the walk of shame to back to get my parcel when the person on the other end of the phone says "no sir its not our policy to have photo id to collect your parcel".
