Lekue Microwave Grill

Options
Just after a bit of advice...

I've ordered this item from L akeland as it had great reviews. My DM has a hankering for toasties but her gas grill is broken and cannot be repaired or easily replaced (built in / 80s).

Thought I would try this for her and would appreciate any 'reviews' from users here. Good? Bad? Indifferent? Difficult to manage? Difficult to wash / put it together again?

Thanks

Not first hand experience so sorry about that, but I have a friend who bought one of these. She does not have the best manual dexterity and found it very unwieldy and tricky if I remember rightly to get the top and bottom bits together (whatever that means) to use and it ended up in a cupboard.

Probably best taking more notice of first hand users, but thought I would mention it.

Most likely there's no one managed to get hold of one! As far as I know the first lot sold out and they've been on order ever since.

I think also its because there is none in stock

Ive been wanting to get one for work as we only have a microwave to use and this would open more possibilities for lunches so I am still keeping my eye on it
  • I have one!....So does my Mum!

They were out of stock at Lakeland, and it took a month or two for them to arrive...but they came a week or so ago.

So far I have only done a basic toasted sandwich - but the instructions show that the grill should cope well with grilling meat and veggies too....

You need to preheat the grill unit in the microwave for 3 minutes - and it is HOT when it comes out...disability means my dexterity isn't the best, and I fumbled a bit wearing oven mitts to get the grill out, open it and the close it and return it to the microwave.....however, I have to say the toastie (sourdough bread, bacon , apple, and Leerdammer) was cheese) was absolutely yummy!..,the bread was beautifully toasted with the classic 'stripes' on the outside, the cheese had melted perfectly...a delicious lunch!...and it washed up REALLY easily ,no melted cheese sticking to the grill.

You DO need to take the grill apart and then reassemble, but it doesn't take long to work out how to do it...I originally put the fastener-straps on incorrectly, but one look at the picture showed me my error!

The "trick" is to not try to remove it from the microwave, but to use the turntable as a tray and lift the turntable out with the grill still on top. You can do that with something thinner, such as a tea towel.

That can be "faffy", getting it back onto the retaining central thingy ... but easier than trying to lift the hot thing out wearing fat gloves.

    Thanks so much!

My worry is the taking it apart and putting it together thing, and it looks like the sandwich would be very squashed and flat. The pics show big fat Ciabatta and sourdoughs.

I'm not back home until Sunday so will give it a try before passing it on on sending it back.

    Thanks again.

Well, the reviews on Lakeland are good. Must admit, I'm tempted, had never heard of this. Very rarely use the sandwich toaster as it's such a faff to clean, even one with removable plates.

There's also a Morphy Richards one on Amazon. My only reservation would be that they only seem to cook one sandwich at a time. I suppose we'd have to share while we waiting for another one to cook.

But I think the MR one is a better shape, as it's more square so would take standard slices of bread better.

Instead of thinking you need an appliance for every meal, toasted sandwich maker for toasted sandwiches, omelette maker for omelettes, pie maker for pies etc. Think about using a pan,

You can make great toasted sandwiches and even Pannini with a frying pan. Heavy base ribbed frying pans work better. Add a tiny bit of oil or butter, or a spray of fry-lite. Heat over a medium heat, press your sandwich down with a spatula, turn it over after a few minutes.

A pan won't take up loads of space, is easy to clean and has multiple uses.
