Carers Allowance

Hi,
I wonder if anybody could give me a little help as where benefits are concerned I am as green as the grass.
My wife has had to retire following treatment for breast cancer, she was a nurse for 30 years. The operation and treatment have taken their toll. But thankfully shes disease free and the disability which is the loss of use of her left arm is a small price to pay.
I myself took early retirement in May, last month my wife was awarded PIP at the standard living rate. No mobility and that's fine as she can walk a fair way unaided it's around the house cooking, cleaning and bathing herself etc that's she struggling with.
Our GP's practice nurse told me to put in for carers allowance which I have, the people at the Carers unit at the DWP I have to say have been very patient with me and helped where they can.
Apparently it can take a fair few weeks the lady was telling me to get the payments through and that's OK.
My question is this, the lady at the carers unit said it will be backdated to the date my wife's PIP was awarded from.. But being on the thick side I cannot work out whether that means early October when the approved her claim for PIP.
Or July 10th when the claim for PIP was made and her award was backdated to. I'm sorry if I appear dense but I can't fathom it.
Thanks in advance

Claiming benefits for the first time, and at other times come to that, can be daunting and confusing. Your Carers Allowance claim can potentially be backdated to the date your wife's PIP claim was awarded. That is July 10th.
