Renting when I part own a property

Hi,

I wanted some advice on a situation I have.

I own a property with my ex who owns a larger proportion of it. Before we decide to sell she is going to live there and I am going to rent a property. I am not going to be charging her any rent, so will not profit from this.

If I come off the council tax and move into a new property (renting) and pay the council tax there is it likely to cause any problems for the mortgage on my owned property as both myself and my ex are both named on the mortgage?

I can provide more information if needed.

    I assume you mean problems for you coming off the council tax.


    If she is happy to pay it then no.


    If she is not then possibly.

    No, if you trust her to pay. If she stops, they will come after you. Careful you don't end up with rent and a mortgage to pay. Personally, I would rent something with a six month break clause just to cover you.


    If she's there alone, she will get -25% discount. You will pay council tax on where you're renting.
