Hi,
Long confusing moan/advice thread.
Moved into a new property recently and utilita were supplying both gas and electric (pre payment). We already had a credit account with BG so wanted to transfer this to the new property.
We were told we had to first switch to BG pre payment for 28 days and then we could have credit meters fitted. BG said we needed to have BG pre payment meters fitted first. We obliged, however they messed up (sending cards but no meter fitted etc) whilst we still had utilita meters but BG were supplying the gas (confused me).
Fast forward a couple of months and after many phone calls and arguments saying we owed hundreds of pounds to BG (terrible customer service) BG have now got to claim the money from utilita. We have now had two bills from BG. One electric and one gas. Both are asking for x amount as whilst paying utilita at their rate and paying no standing charges to utilita British gas would have apparently charged more per unit and charged a standing charge.
Its got to the point where im looking to leave BG. Apparently we can't move to a credit meter as we are in debt with them. If they got their act together we wouldn't owe them money. I can't stand having a pre payment meter. Do we have any rights in relation to these debts. It wasn't down to us that the meter changes dragged on. We even have 30 quid compo as they missed an appointment and we had no gas recently as the meter wasn't set up correctly.
There is a question in there somewhere!
Thanks,

When you moved in, before contacting BG did you contact Utilita to let them know you had moved in?0

Move in and you are in a Deemed Contract with the existing supplier .
You register with them and are then free to move.0 -

It doesn't work that way - you can't transfer suppliers from one property to another.
On leaving your old property you give your meter readings to the supplier who will cancel the contract and raise a final bill or send a credit to your bank.
On moving in or taking responsibility for the new property you give meter readings to the existing supplier and then you are on a deemed contract on a standard (ie expensive tariff). You are then free to switchNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
